The National Guard's annual military exercises, scheduled to take place next week, have been cancelled, the Cypriot Defense Ministry officially announced on Sunday.

"The Ministry of Defense announces that the planned maneuvers NIKIFOROS - 2002 by the National Guard from 29 October to 3 November are cancelled," a ministry press release said.

The official announcement came following statements by President Glafcos Clerides and Defense Minister Socratis Hasikos that the exercises will not take place, according to the official Cyprus News Agency.

NIKIFOROS was to have taken place in conjunction with Greek military maneuvers Toxotis, but on Friday, Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou announced a Greco-Turkish agreement to postpone all military exercises Athens, Ankara and Nicosia had planned for the forthcoming weeks. (Albawaba.com)
