The lower house of Czech parliament adopted a resolution early Saturday calling on the embattled TV director general Jiri Hodac to quit, in an aim to solve the two-week-old crisis surrounding Czech state television (CT).

Ninety six of 178 deputies present -- the parliament numbers 200 members -- voted in favour of the resolution, which said Hodac's immediate resignation was necessary to resolve the crisis.

The parliamentarians appealed to the Czech TV board of governors -- which nominated Hodac on December 20 -- to sack Hodac unless he resigned of his own accord before Monday.

CT journalists have been occupying their newsroom since December 20 in protest over the appointment of Hodac, which they say was politically motivated.

The extraordinary session of the lower house of parliament came after demonstrations Wednesday which brought up to 100,000 people into Prague's Wenceslas Square, in the biggest protest since the fall of communism -- PRAGUE (AFP)
