A Daesh-affiliated group has taken control of an air base in Libya’s central city of Sirte, a Libyan militia spokesman told AP.
Sirte is the group’s stronghold in Libya.
Mohammed al-Shamia, a spokesman for the 166 Battalion militia, told AP his forces withdrew from the al-Qardabiya air base on Thursday after receiving no reinforcements.
A statement from the area’s Daesh affiliate confirmed that the group had seized the air base.
Libya is plagued with chaos and political instability four years after the removal of longtime autocrat Moammar Gaddafi.
In February, militants pledging allegiance to Daesh released a video showing the beheadings of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christian workers on a beach in Libya. A similar video released in April showed Daesh fighters executing Ethiopian Christians in various locations in Libya.
