On Tuesday morning, a car bomb that exploded in the heart of Damascus caused five fatalities, according to coverage from local media, such as the pan-Arab Al Mayadeen TV station.
The explosion took place close to the Syrian government's Interior Ministry, which is situated in the district of Marjeh, in the area that used to be the central square of Damascus before the city expanded in the 1800s.
Many more casualties are expected to be reported.
This car bomb attack comes one day after the convoy of Syria's Prime Minister was targeted in Damascus, injuring 20 civilians. The PM escaped unscathed.
Increasingly, Damascus is becoming a target in the Syrian crisis as the city has been rocked by a wave of bombing attacks.
