An official Syrian daily Sunday welcomed the UN resolution cracking down on the financial sources of terrorism while calling for a debate on the root causes of the phenomenon.
The unanimously-approved resolution "shows that the United Nations is able to honor its goals of peace and security and that all countries want to battle against terrorism," said the paper of the ruling Baath party.
Al-Baath, however, added that Friday's "resolution remains incomplete in so far as it only touches upon a single aspect of the problem, while leaving aside the key aspect: the causes that lead to terrorism."
"The resolution also fails to define terrorism, lest it be confused with the legitimate resistance of people struggling for independence," the paper said.
"The missing elements are an obstacle to the full wiping out of terrorism," says Al-Baath, which warns that "the consequences of an anti-terrorist strike, such as put in motion by the United States, can only be transitory."
The Security Council voted unanimously for a US-sponsored resolution obliging member states to crack down on the sources of financial and logistical support for terrorist groups.
