A verdict will be issued on January 22 in the case of an Egyptian English teacher, aged 42, accused of having sent an e-mail threatening US Ambassador David Welch.

The state security court in Asyut set the date after a hearing in which the prosecution requested "the toughest penalty" against the defendant, Samir Hanna, MENA reported Wednesday.

Hanna's arrest was reported earlier this month after he warned Welch in an e-mail to the FBI that he risked his life if he visited Asyut, his home town, some 380 kilometers south of Cairo.

The message was sent shortly before Welch made the visit on December 11 and 12, without incident.

Hanna was charged with spreading abroad false information liable to harm the national interest. (Albawaba.com)
