ALBAWABA- A car plowed into a crowd in the western German city of Mannheim, killing one person and injuring several others, police reported on Monday.

The driver has been detained, though authorities have not confirmed if additional suspects are involved.

The incident took place as crowds gathered for carnival celebrations, with local media reporting that a black SUV sped through Paradeplatz square towards the city's iconic water tower.

Bystanders were seen covering at least one injured person with their coats in the aftermath of the suspected attack.

Germany has witnessed a series of violent incidents in recent months, including car rammings in Magdeburg and Munich, as well as a deadly stabbing in Mannheim last May.
