Department of National Library Raids Commercial Establishment for Installing Unlicensed Software on Computers
Raid demonstrates Jordan’s commitment to the protection of intellectual property rights
The Department of the National Library has raided a commercial establishment in Amman that installs unlicensed software on computers sold to business and home users, enforcing Jordanian laws on the protection of intellectual property rights and demonstrating the Kingdom’s continued commitment to the development of a safe and legal environment for local and international developers and innovators to prosper.
Inspectors from the Department of the National Library confiscated more than 20 CDs and DVDs of pirated Microsoft software that was being illegally downloaded on to PCs. The case was referred to official authorities to take the necessary measures against the infringing party.
The Business Software Alliance (BSA), the foremost organization dedicated to promoting a safe and legal digital world, praised the dedication of the Department of the National Library’s personnel and leadership and their commitment and diligence in pursuing Intellectual Property infringements all over Jordan.
Aly Harakeh, BSA spokesperson for the Eastern Mediterranean region, stated, “The BSA applauds the actions of the Department of the National Library in its continuous efforts to promote Intellectual Property awareness and its determination to fight IP piracy, including software piracy. Contrary to popular belief, piracy does not benefit consumers and businesses - It does however contribute to depriving Jordan of its resources, driving local talent away from the country, slowing its economic growth and tarnishing its image.”
Zeid Shubailat, Country Manager of Microsoft Jordan, said, “Microsoft’s worldwide strategy for combating piracy is built on three main pillars; Education, Engineering and Enforcement. From an educational and awareness perspective, we are focused on ensuring that our customers and partners are made aware of the risks associated with distributing or using pirated software, such as the possible loss of data, viruses, malware and spyware associated with the use of hacked product keys, in addition to making sure that pirates understand that Microsoft is serious about protecting its intellectual property.”
Intellectual Property protection in Jordan contributes to the creation of hundreds of high paid jobs, an increase in local industry revenues by millions of dinars, generates millions of dinars in tax revenues and reinforces the Kingdom’s image as a fertile ground for innovation and creativity.
