A top aide to Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov was in serious condition Wednesday at the city's main hospital, a day after surviving an assassination attempt, doctors said.
Joseph Ordzhonikidze was severely wounded in the apparent contract killing, in which his driver was killed.
Doctors operated for four hours Tuesday to save the 52-year-old's life, whose internal organs had been grazed by a bullet.
Two men opened fire on the car carrying Ordzhonikidze, who is in charge of Moscow's foreign economic relations, early Tuesday, in an attack that Luzhkov blamed on criminal groups seeking revenge.
"He clearly crossed someone's path," Luzhkov said on Tuesday.
