The militant Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine warned the Palestinian Authority Friday against renewing security cooperation with Israel.
The aim of restarting security cooperation "is to control the Palestinian uprising, or Intifada, as a prelude to peace negotiations based upon the miserable Oslo" peace agreements, DFLP central committee member Motassem Hamada said in a statement from the group's headquarters in Damascus.
Hamada called for an intensification of the Intifada, or Palestinian uprising, with the "objective of bringing about negotiations based on the application of international resolutions."
He demanded Israel withdraw from the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip to the borders existing before it occupied the territories in the June 1967 Middle East war. He also demanded the right of return for refugees and the establishment of a Palestinian capital in east Jerusalem.
The DFLP, directed by Nayef Hawatmeh, is opposed to the 1993 Oslo peace agreement, which paved the way for Palestinian autonomy in the occupied territories. The DFLP constitutes one of the three main factions in the Palestine Liberation Organization, which is chaired by Yasser Arafat.
Amid widespread skepticism, Israelis and Palestinians are to meet in Cairo Sunday under the chairmanship of US Central Intelligence Agency chief George Tenet to find a way to reduce the level of violence and enable new peace talks to begin -- DAMASCUS (AFP)
