DHL UAE recently held a special Family Fun Day in recognition of its employees’ children who participated in the regional UNICEF painting competition depicting life in Kenya.

A total of 100 children aged six to 13 from the Middle East took part in the competition where they were asked to depict what they thought life would be like for children in Kenya. Out of the top 10 winners two are from the United Arab Emirates; they are Sheila Marie Villanueva and Yousra Ijaz.

The event marked the first year anniversary of the partnership between DHL’s parent company, Deutsche Post World Net (DPWN), and UNICEF in the campaign to reduce child mortality around the world. DPWN’s global cooperation with UNICEF began with a project in Kenya in response to an East African outbreak of infectious diseases including measles, polio and malaria in the spring and summer of 2006. Children were the worst affected.

DPWN has also launched an ongoing employee donation and fundraising campaign, as part of the initiative with UNICEF. DHL UAE employees and their families were able to raise more than Dhs12,000 by selling DHL-UNICEF branded chocolate boxes at the Family Fun Day and at DHL service points.

Globally, 30,000 girls and boys under the age of five die every day mostly of diseases that could be prevented or treated, according to UNICEF. Through this partnership, DHL is offering logistics know-how to help make a significant contribution to improving children’s lives in disadvantaged areas around the world.

DHL UAE General Manager Janet Jweihan lead the celebration held at the Safa Park where she handed gifts to those children who participated in the painting competition. The two winning paintings from the UAE were displayed at the event.
