Kheireddine Ameyar, director of one of the most influential French-language Algerian dailies, La Tribune, committed suicide this week, the paper announced Saturday.
The sudden death of Ameyar, 54, who killed himself early Friday, left the Algerian press in shock, with papers unanimously paying tribute on Saturday.
Ameyar worked for the government newspaper El Moudjahid from 1974 to 1978 before joining Algerie-Actualite until 1981. He later became that daily's general manager in 1990.
He founded the independent daily La Nation in 1992, later leaving that paper to create La Tribune in 1994.
