DP World – UAE’s Jebel Ali Terminal handles a record breaking 8,571 moves in a single vessel operation

A record breaking 8,571 moves in a single vessel operation have been successfully completed by DP World – UAE, the regions leading port & terminal operator at their Mega-Terminal in Jebel Ali. This represents the maximum number of moves per vessel, breaking the record of 6,804 moves in January 2005.

Commenting on the pace of operations, Mohammed Al-Muallem, Senior Vice-President and Managing Director of DP World – UAE, said, “DP World – UAE has been growing at an accelerated pace. The throughput of Jebel Ali and Port Rashid for June 2006 is estimated at 715,300 TEUs as compared to the 618,920 TEUs in June 2005. This growth & the record breaking number of moves are a commendable achievement which I attribute to the efficiency of my team.”

The moves were completed in 41 hours at a high productivity level. Says Arif Al Dehail, Executive Director - Jebel Ali Container Terminal, “Our team is very experienced and it is through their knowledge and commitment that we are and will be able to continue operating at such high levels of efficiency.”

The moves carried out on MSC Rania, the latest 8,400 TEU vessel were implemented through the tandem lift cranes which are capable of lifting either, two 40 foot containers or four 20 foot containers simultaneously. The tandem lift cranes have been designed specifically for DP World – UAE, Jebel Ali Terminal. The terminal already operates a total of 45 cranes, 10 of which are tandem lift cranes.
