Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital celebrated the opening of its Patient Teaching Center (PTC) a modern, medical information and educational hub today. Open to all the hospital patients, the free of charge center seeks to empower patients and their families, offering access to health and medical-related knowledge.
The PTC, situated on first floor of the new building (two), is coordination with by ARAMCO. The center-staff includes a team of specialized accredited doctors, health educators and nurses. “Inside the center is equipped with an Audio Visual Lab and Library for patient’s use. Patients and families are referred by treating doctors.
At the opening, son of the hospital founder Dr. Mazen Soliman Fakeeh, a Consultant Internal Medicine and Endocrinologist, and the Deputy Director General of the Hospital said, “Education motivates patients to adopt behaviors that may help resolve current illnesses and possibly prevents future ones.”
“It has been established that treatment is more effective generally, if patients understand their illness and why they should follow the treatment. The more the patients know about their disorders, the more likely they will respond to the doctor’s advice. This is more evident in cases of prevailing conditions such as, for example, diabetes, and heart problems. Education encourages self monitoring.”
Cardiology Consultant, Professor Hesham Salah El Din, the Director of Education/Chairman of the Research & Ethics Committee, gave the prominent attendants an overview of the Patient Teaching Center’s mission. Combining its resources with the expertise of the teaching specialists, the PTC will supply accurate, relevant, and appropriate information about the patient’s specific medical condition or illnesses. This information will be tailored in easily-understandable terms according to the individual's needs.
“Hospital-based education is efficient. It reaches people where they already are. The patient simply has already come to the hospital and seeking treatment or assurance,” recommended Dr. Mazen. Health education programs addressing common illness such as diabetes, asthma, hypertension, angina, and heart attacks will be regularly held at PTC. “Visitors get to know the signs and symptoms of illnesses, how to react immediately, as well as how to prevent further disease.”
