A suspected US drone strike in southeastern Yemen killed five suspected al-Qaeda members, a local official told AFP on Wednesday.

“An unmanned aircraft fired a missile against an Al-Qaeda vehicle in Mukalla,” capital of the vast desert Hadramawt province, killing five suspected militants, the official said.

The United States is the only country known to be operating armed drones over the war-torn Gulf country, and strikes by the unmanned aircraft have continued alongside clashes between pro-government loyalists and Houthi rebels.

Witnesses in Mukalla have recently reported an increased number of al-Qaeda militants inside the port city, AFP reported.
