ALBAWABA - A drunk driver ran over a crowd waiting for free food, killing six people at a Buddhist festival near the Sri Lankan capital, police announced in a statement.

The 42-year-old driver fled the scene of the crash in Megoda, on the outskirts of Colombo, late Sunday evening. Six people were killed, and seven others were injured in the accident.

Police said they arrested the suspect, and tests confirmed he was under the influence of alcohol.

The victims were waiting to receive free meals distributed as part of the Vesak Buddhist festival celebrations.

AFP reported that Sri Lanka records approximately 3,000 road fatalities annually.
