DSS 2008 Photography Exhibition concludes with World Photography Day
Winning entries announced from 53 applications

The Photography Exhibition, a Dubai Summer Surprises 2008 Signature Event, officially concluded with an Awards Ceremony coinciding with the World Photography Day on Tuesday, 19 August, 2008.

The event, held at the Ittihad Ballroom in Deira City Centre Hotel, was attended by Ibrahim Saleh, Coordinator General of Dubai Shopping Festival; and Salah Al Kassim, Advisor in Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, in addition to the participants of the Exhibition and, local and regional media.

Around 100 applications were received by the DSF Office to be included in the exhibition, out of which 53 were chosen based on the criteria set for the competition. The three winning entries from the 53 were announced and Ibrahim Saleh handed out the prizes to the winners.

Ibrahim Saleh explained that the Photography Exhibition was “one of the many innovative initiatives launched by the Dubai Shopping Festival Office in 2005 as one of the mega events of Dubai Summer Surprises, with the aim of celebrating and honouring talents both locally and globally.”

“The Photography Exhibition is tailored to celebrate the talents of junior and professional photographers alike. This year’s exhibition witnessed the largest scope of applicants since its inception with around 100 applicants coming from around the globe,” he added.   

Abdul Nasser, from India, was announced as the winner of the Photography Exhibition for his image of a desert Bedouin captured in black and white. The second position was bagged by Abdullah Ali, from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, for his photograph of a potter at work. Ammar Al Attar, from the UAE, took the third place with his portrayal of hands weaving a net. The winners took home cash prizes of AED 15,000, 10,000, and 5,000 respectively in addition to trophies.

The winners were adjudged by a jury consisting of His Excellency Mohammed Al Murr, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority; Ibrahim Saleh; and Mohammed Hisham, Vice-President of the Arab Photographers Union.

The Photography Exhibition this year was the fourth such edition organised during DSS and one among the Signature Events in 2008. Since its inception, the final day of the Photography Exhibition has been organised to coincide with the World Photography Day which is held every year to honour the efforts of photographers worldwide.
