Dubai’s retailers gear up for frenzied shopping activity during DSS 2008
• Retail expenditure during DSS 2007 touched AED 850 million while AED 250 million was spent on dining
DSS Office begins accepting applications for ‘Summer Deals’
With only three weeks to go for the start of the eleventh edition of the region’s major summer extravaganza - Dubai Summer Surprises - the DSF Office has announced that it has commenced receiving applications for ‘Summer Deals’, where retailers in Dubai can register themselves and avail of numerous benefits in offering their best deals to shoppers.
Retailers who wish to submit their applications may do so by visiting the DSF Office in the first floor of Dubai Economic Department building from 9 am to 4 pm, on working days. Registration closes on August 22.
Suhaila Gobash, DSF Office Sponsorship Manager, said, “We are once again approaching that time of the year when shopping is going to take centre stage in Dubai, and we invite retailers in the emirate to make the most of this opportunity by participating in DSS 2008. Statistics show that, in Dubai, the summer months see a definite surge in retail sales as a result of various factors such as increased tourist inflow and family events such as DSS, and we are positive that the summer of 2008 will be the best ever for retailers and shoppers alike.”
Consumer spending during DSS 2007 totalled AED 3.21 billion, out of which retail expenditure amounted to AED 825 million, while AED 250 million was spent on dining; statistics which clearly highlight Dubai’s emergence as the region’s favourite shopping and leisure destination. Moreover, in 2008, the consumer spending in Dubai is expected to increase by 20 to 25 per cent, complemented by an 8 to 10 per cent expected increase in visitors to the emirate.
“There has been a steady growth of consumer expenditure during DSS over the past decade and this augurs well for Dubai’s retail industry which is one among the most vibrant in the region today. DSS presents a win-win situation for both retailers and shoppers, and the DSF Office would like to highlight this fact,” added Gobash.
Retail outlets applying for the ‘Summer Deals’ can pay the relevant fees at the time of registration in cash or cheque. If the mode of payment is by cheque, it should be made payable to the Department of Economic Development. Once the form is submitted, a DSS Participation Certificate will be issued.
All participating retail outlets will be under the supervision of the DSF Office to ensure that they abide by the stipulated rules and regulations. Non-participating retail outlets and restaurants will not be allowed by the Department of Economic Development or the Dubai Municipality to conduct any kind of promotion or sales during DSS to ensure fair retail practices.
