As a responsible organization, Dubai Aluminium Company Limited (“DUBAL”) is committed to protecting the environment by minimising the impact of its operations on the air, water, land resources and associated eco-systems. This is demonstrated on an ongoing basis through ever-increasing corporate focus on sustainable development practices — such as minimising harmful emissions and effluents, conserving energy, optimising raw material usage, and recycling of products and by-products.

Aiming to instil a similar recycling culture among employees, DUBAL has this month launched the company’s first-ever campaign that combines environmental education with facilities that encourage environment-friendly behaviour. Known as the Green Life Project, the initiative is designed to teach people to ‘Think green, act green’, thereby nurturing individual responsibility towards protecting the environment and conserving precious natural resources.

Literature on recycling paper, plastic and aluminium drink cans — all printed on 100 per cent recycled paper — has been produced and distributed to all employees; and informational posters have been placed around the company’s Jebel Ali site. Six recycling islands (each comprising a set of three clearly branded bins for segregating the three types of recyclable materials targeted) have been placed in various parking lots within the DUBAL site, while paper recycling bins have also been placed near the document processing stations within the administration areas. Individual paper recycling boxes have also been distributed at every workstation where paper is used. In due course, as and when appropriate, additional facilities will be made available for recycling other materials.

“Our aim is to help our employees understand the purpose and importance of recycling while highlighting how every person can play a role in protecting the environment,” says Khalid Buhumaid (Vice President: Corporate Relations & International Affairs and Official Spokesperson of DUBAL). “After reading the literature, our employees are well-equipped to  sort the recyclable items from their general waste at home; bring the segregated recyclables to the most conveniently located recycling island at DUBAL; and place the items in the relevant recycling bins. Of course, the segregated waste will be collected from DUBAL by recycling companies on a regular basis, thus ensuring that the items are recycled appropriately.

“Above all, by encouraging individual employee participation, we hope to prove how the smallest things can make the biggest difference. By working together, we will surely minimise both our corporate and our personal impact on the environment,” says Buhumaid.
