Dubai Chamber participates in Offshore Arabia 2009
Buamim:” Social Responsibility is the key to sustainable development”
HE Eng Hamad Buamim, Director General, Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry stressed that the Emirate of Dubai is turning into a marine- friendly environment with the introduction and implementation of policies and strategies that aim at the sustainable development of businesses.
HE Hamad Buamim’s speech was made during the 2nd day activities of the Offshore Arabia 2009 conference which was inaugurated on Sunday. Buamim pointed out that the government structures in UAE in addition to the non-government environment groups had put the issue of environment as top priority on their agenda.
“The Clean Gulf concept is not just a matter of cleaning up oil spills but it is also protecting the marine environment from any harm caused by sources on land and sea.” Buamim said. “Preventing major risks is more important than responding to incidents and this perspective requires a shift in the business culture, from a short term gain to long term sustainability,” added Buamim.
Buamim pointed out that the role of Dubai Chamber in this regard stems from its commitment to serve the business community in Dubai as Dubai Chamber highlights the positive role models of the businesses who are committed to sustainable development and this in return will push more companies to follow the example of these leading companies.
Director General of Dubai Chamber highlighted the key role played by Dubai Chamber’s centre for Responsible Business in promoting business responsibility in the United Arab Emirates through raising awareness of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in business and with customers, encouraging business to implement best practice standards, providing direct
advice and tools to businesses to improve their CSR performance and measuring and documenting the awareness and the implementation of responsible business practices in Dubai.
Buamim added that Dubai Chamber has its own internal environment committee that looks after recycling and other environmental issues at its headquarter with measures and mechanisms being implemented long ago to reduce, conserve and preserve energy and water resources. “Our Environmental Initiatives have been recently recognized when Dubai Chamber recently was honored in the Middle East Business Awards (MEBA) in the category of the Environment Contribution of the Year Award.” Buamim said.
