Dubai Municipality announced on Monday that it would carry out inspections to confiscate endangered marine animals that are being caught in contravention of federal and local laws, along with illegal fishing equipment.

Offenders will be fined and have to bear the cost of any damage caused to the local environment, reported the Gulf News.

Hamdan Al Shaer, the director of the environment department at the municipality, said inspections would carried out in fish markets, fishing villages, fishing net factories, shops selling fishing nets, natural sanctuaries in Ras Al Khor and Jebel Ali, in small creeks, in coastal areas, in boat anchorage areas and in ports.

Shaer told the paper that the municipality would also carry out cleaning operations in fishing ports and villages in the emirate and confiscate old vehicles, clear out unauthorized fishing enclaves and move abandoned launches that spoiled the appearance of the area or posed an environmental hazard – Albawaba.com
