A relatively strong earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale shook Iran's northeastern Khorassan province on Monday, state radio reported.

It gave no word about damage or casualties from the quake, which occurred in Nahbandan at 10:24 am (0654 GMT) close to the border with Afghanistan.

Iran is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world, with tremors an almost daily event -- TEHRAN (AFP)
