The effects of the U.S.-led economic embargo are being felt also on the Iraqi canned dates manufacturing industry, according to a major industry source.
Al-Quds Al-Arabi daily reports that the industry has deteriorated sharply in the recent few years compared with the pre-embargo period as a result of deteriorating machinery and production lines.
Most of the local canned dates factories are forced to use labor instead of machinery, which has reduced manufacturing capacity to 25% of pre-embargo levels, said the Director of the Dates Manufacturing and Marketing Company in Basra, Habib Al-Shawi. The current production capacity ranges from 15-17 ton per day, compared to 50 ton per day before the embargo.
