Egypt's foreign minister formally requested that the Arab League host an emergency summit on the Iraq crisis, Egypt's Middle East News Agency reported Friday.
Ahmed Maher asked Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa to convene the summit "as soon as possible" at the league's headquarters in Cairo, the Egyptian statement said.
An annual Arab leaders summit was scheduled for next month in Bahrain. But the intensifying Iraqi crisis has forced Arab nations to consider holding the summit earlier.
