Egypt has imposed restrictions on female citizens planning travel to Turkey, several months after setting in place similar measures for men, AFP reported.
Women aged 18-40 will be required to obtain security clearance before any travel to Turkey, a police chief told AFP. The measures took effect Thursday, according to Cairo airport officials.
Similar restrictions were introduced in December for men and also apply to any travel to Egypt’s conflict-ridden neighbor Libya.
Egyptian state-sponsored Islamic authorities warned women in March against travelling Daesh-controlled territories to marry militants.
Turkey has been a common entry point for militant-hopefuls, both men and women, wishing to join Daesh in Syria.
Daesh has in recent months become a major security concern within Egypt. Daesh-affiliate Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, which pledged allegiance to the extremist group in November, has carried out numerous attacks against Egyptian security forces in the Sinai peninsula.
