Egypt's Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis pledges allegiance to ISIL

Egypt’s most active militant group which is thought responsible for the beheading for alleged Israeli spies last August, has now sworn its allegiance to ISIL.

The group known as Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis is also thought to be behind last week’s attack on Egyptian soldiers in northern Sinai in which 33 people died.

Egyptian security forces are facing a jihadist insurgency that has already killed hundreds of soldiers and police since the toppling of President Mohamed Morsi.

Ansar claims it has sought inspiration and advice from ISIL which has taken over swathes of Iraq and Syria.
