An Egyptian citizen who was convicted in 2002 of spying for Israel has died in jail while serving a 15-year term, Egyptian security sources said on Monday. Sharif al-Filali, believed to be in his early 40s, was convicted in a state security court of trying to collect military information and data on Egyptian tourism and an agricultural project.
Court documents said al-Filali travelled between Spain and Egypt in 1999, before realizing he was collecting information for Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency. He then turned himself in to the Egyptian authorities.
According to Reuters, one Egyptian security source said the circumstances of the man's death on Sunday were unclear.
