Egypt's prosecutor-general has referred a police officer to criminal court over the killing of leftist activist Shaimaa El-Sabbagh at a peaceful protest in January, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.
The prosecution charged the officer with the crime of "beating that led to death", according a statement it released on Tuesday.
Prosecution also referred members of the Socialist Popular Alliance Party, who organised the protest, to criminal court for violating the 2013 protest law which outlaws unauthorised demonstrations and "disrupting public peace and security".
El-Sabbagh died of wounds resulting from birdshots as police dispersed a small peaceful protest on 24 January 2015 to commemorate the victims of the January 25 Revolution in downtown Cairo.
Prosecutors had ordered a media gag on the case shortly after investigations started.
