Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher has voiced optimism about the recent assignment of William Burns to the post of US Middle East envoy, saying the diplomat is expected to push issues forward, reported the Kuwaiti news agency (KUNA).
Maher said in a press conference held at the Egyptian foreign ministry on Thursday that Burns' mission was about implementing the Mitchell report.
He expressed his best wishes for the American envoy to succeed in his mission, especially given Palestinian support for the Mitchell report and the United States' unconditional acceptance of it.
Maher said he hoped that Burns would pressure the Israeli side into accepting the report.
Palestinian officials stress that the report's recommendations should be implemented as a whole, while Israel has made a distinction between halting the violence and the demand for a settlement freeze – Albawaba.com
