Ibrahim Mahlab, Egypt’s new prime minister, addressed the nation for the first time in a televised speech on Sunday.
Mahlab focused on the importance of security and acknowledged the challenges Egypt currently faces. Since Mohammad Morsi was removed from power, Egypt has been terrorized by attacks on tourists and security forces alike.
"The first priority is to impose security, counter terrorism firmly and legally, and restore stability by preserving human rights and democracy," said Mahlab. Adding, “I know that the responsibility is big, that the challenges are bigger. But together, we will face all crises and steer the nation's ship to the shore of security."
Mahlab also had a message directed at laborers.
"I urge you to end any sit-ins, strikes and protests. Let's begin rebuilding the nation,"
The Egyptian government recently resigned, prompting a shakeup in the government’s structure. Mahlab recently revealed a new 31-member cabinet that kept Abdel Fattah al Sisi as defense minister. Egypt is set to hold elections in the spring.
