The state of emergency, imposed in Egypt in 1981, ended on Thursday, the ruling military council said. The army "will continue to take responsibility to protect the national security of the nation and citizens (...), given the end of the state of emergency declared in accordance with the constitution and law", said the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (AFSC) in a statement released by the official MENA news agency.

"The state of emergency ended today," reported also public television.

The emergency law was imposed after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat by Islamists in 1981. Since then, it was renewed continuously and for the last time in 2010 for two years until May 31, 2012.

According to the law, the state of emergency allows restrictions on public freedoms and holding trials before special courts.
