Egyptian activist Saadeddine Ibrahim, who's been in detention in Egypt for more than a month said Sunday that the government arrested him to cover up irregularities in parliamentary elections, reported the BBC.online.
Ibrahim said in a statement released from prison that Ibn Khaldun Center had in the past ensured the integrity of elections and reduced the possibilities of fraud.
He added that he believed a case might have been contrived against him in order to prevent him from making new accusations during the forthcoming parliamentary elections, said the BBC.
Ibrahim, who holds a dual American-Egyptian nationality, was accused of undermining national security by accepting funds from abroad and forging voter cards.
The United States has repeatedly called for Ibrahim's release, added the BBC – Albawaba.com
