Libyan President Moamer Kadhafi held talks on Tuesday with visiting Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on United States threats to attack Iraq and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, officials said.

The talks took place outside the northern Libyan town of Sirte. The two leaders "underlined the need to support the international position calling on certain countries not to strike Iraq," Egyptian Information Minister Safwat al-Sherif told state television in Cairo.

Moreover, they called for "every opportunity to be given to UN weapons inspectors to perform their mission in accordance with international resolutions," Sherif said.

They called upon a "balanced approach" to the elimination of weapons of mass destruction from the Middle East, in a clear reference to the large arsenals believed to be held by Israel.

The Egyptian president's visit was the latest in a flurry of consultations between Arab leaders fearful of the de-stabilizing impact of threatened US military action to oust Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, according to AFP. (Albawaba.com)
