Egyptian Mufti Okays Organ Transplants

The Egyptian Mufti, Nasr Farid Wassel, has confirmed that under the Islamic law, the transplantation of organs from living or dead bodies is permissible, the daily Al Ahram said. 

But the mufti set conditions that should be met when such operations are done.  

The doctors must decide that the transplant would save the life of the recepient while the donor must not be negatively affected.  

Asked to give his religious opinion on the controversy over the brain death, the mufti said that the final say in this matter is the doctors’. 

The Egyptian top ranking cleric made his comments at a meeting of the joint committee representing the ministry of health and the Shura Council -- Albawaba.com
