Head of the Economic Committee at Egypt’s Parliament (Peoples’ Assembly) has fallen under a bitter criticism by the opposition paper Sawt al Umma, which accused him Wednesday of using his title to achieve personal benefits.
The paper said that Abdullah Tayel, who is also chairman of Egypt-Exterior Bank, has used his power to obtain unguaranteed loans from banks through his son, while he personally took huge loans from his bank.
The paper claimed that Tayel, who started his career as a small official, has climbed the ladder so rapidly with the help of some influential figures, allegedly including the ruling party’s strong man, Kamal Shazli.
Tayel, according to the paper, has helped failed businessmen in getting loans including Tayseer Hawari and Magdi Yacoub.
After helping the two, the MP was accused of facilitating embezzlement of public money, said the paper.
The paper challenged Tayel to respond to its accusations, claiming it has documents to prove the charges.
