Egyptian political parties have condemned US threats to attack Afghanistan, citing the still incomplete investigations of the recent terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, as well as bin Laden’s denial of involvement.

“Our condemnation of the terrorist attacks in the US does not mean that we advocate that the US terrorize other countries, particularly in view of the fact that investigations are still underway and have not decisively detected a specific accused party,” said the Muslim Brotherhood spokesman in Egypt, Maamoun Al Hudaibi.

He reiterated that a military assault at present would be an unfair terrorist attack which would lead to more terrorism.

Hudaibi further said that “many leaders have called upon the US to refrain from taking any retaliatory actions before the investigations are completed, including presidents Mubarak and Putin. Also, many organizations have demanded that the issue be referred to the UN, and have called upon the US not to carry out any attack unilaterally.”

Meanwhile, a representative of the Egyptian Socialist Movement, Kamal Khalil, told Albawaba.com that any attack on Afghanistan would incite popular feelings against the US.

“These feelings are already flaring against the US for its bias in favor of Israel and its longstanding crimes against people in the region and throughout the world,” added Khalil.

He added that the hatred among Egyptians towards the US might develop into actions, should Afghanistan be attacked or its people oppressed.

The head of the Islamist-oriented Java Research Center, Sayyed Ahmed, told Albawaba.com that “any attacks on Afghanistan will be a very serious act which will impact the US itself. There are more than 120 small violent organizations throughout the world described by the West as terrorist organizations which are enemies of the US. Any attacks on Afghanistan will be a declaration of war against these organizations, which the US will not win in the long run.”

Meanwhile, the editor in chief of the weekly Al Arabi, issued by the Naserist Party, warned against joining “an alleged US-led antiterrorist coalition.”

“This coalition will be a preparation for launching attacks on some Arab and Muslim countries,” said Abdulla Al Sinnawi, adding that Egypt had no interest in joining such attacks, which would spark violent reactions among Arabs and Muslims.
