The Egyptian state security prosecution on Tuesday decided to put an unemployed Egyptian on trial before a state security court in Alexandria for trying to spy for Israel.
Egyptian security authorities detained Majdi Anwar Muhammad Tawfiq when he tried to spy for Israel by sending faxes to the Israeli consulate in Alexandria in which he said he was ready to provide the Israeli intelligence with information. If convicted, the defendant could face life in prison with hard labor, Egyptian news agency MENA reported.
The prosecution said Tawfiq planned to undermine Egypt's political, diplomatic and economic status and forged documents to prove he was a minister plenipotentiary at the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.
The man left Egypt in 1983 for work in an African state, where he spied for foreign diplomats. He was deported to Egypt.
Failing to find a job, Tawfiq offered himself to the Israeli Mossad, but his attempt was early foiled by the security authorities, MENA reported. (Albawaba.com)
