EHS conducts campaign to raise awareness about safety on roads

EHS, the Environment, Health and Safety arm of Trakees, Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation, has organized an awareness campaign at the Documentation and Records Section - Jebel Ali Free Zone to educate motorists on traffic safety. The campaign marked the launch of the 24th Gulf Traffic Week activities in cooperation with Dubai Police Traffic Department.

The Awareness Campaign, which ended yesterday, included several activities and programmes with the participation of over 500 motorists of different nationalities. Lieutenant Colonel Youssif Juma’ and First Officer Omar Musallam explained the mechanism of the black points system and the importance of abiding by the traffic rules, fastening the  seat belts and the hazards of dangerous overtaking.

The awareness lectures focused on what should be done while driving a vehicle in foggy  weather conditions. A motorist should make sure that his front windshield, headlights and taillights are clean and in working order, to avoid accidents.

A motorist should also leave adequate distance between his vehicle and the vehicle ahead, gradually slowing down, so that he would be within the range of the view of the car in front. Drivers should also refrain from speeding up to keep adequate distance from the vehicle behind them. Changing lanes should also be avoided except when necessary.

Motorists should at all times use the high and low beams in order to provide bigger range of vision. Motorists should refrain from using hazard lights except in emergencies and should remember to use turn signals.

Lt. Col. Youssif Juma’ also stressed the importance of using windshield wipers for a clear view of the road ahead, and to always  expect the unexpected while driving, such as the sudden stop of the vehicle in front of them or the sudden entry of a vehicle from a roundabout or lane.

He called on the public and motorists to abide by the specified speed limits on roads, especially in highly fickle weather, referring to the dangerous accidents which lately took place because of excessive speed.

The awareness lectures were delivered in three languages: Arabic, English and Urdu, with the aim of spreading traffic awareness among the public. EHS also gave away gifts and awareness flyers to participating motorists.
