At least 10 people died on Sunday when they were forced off a ferry and into the Nile in a crush caused by passengers rushing to disembark, a security official said. The official told Reuters the rush by passengers caused the vessel's side railings to collapse, forcing people into the river, where they drowned. He said more people were missing.

Another security official put the death toll at six and said six other people were missing. Five others were injured in the accident. The accident took place at a village in the province of Minya in central Egypt, about 200 km south of Cairo.

The semi-official news agency, MENA, said the Egyptians on the ferry were traveling to a cemetery to pay their respects during the three-day holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
