The Eiffel Tower was briefly evacuated on Sunday after an anonymous caller warned police of a bomb at the French capital's most visited landmark, police said.

Police carried out a search but found nothing suspicious, and the tower was able to reopen around an hour later.

A security cordon was immediately put into place around the tower, and visitors were cleared from the plaza underneath the monument before the tower's management decided to temporarily evacuate the premises.

Visitors and workers at the tower and its two restaurants were allowed to return an hour later.

Employees said it was the first time the Eiffel Tower had been evacuated since the September 11 attacks in the United States.

The incident came a day after hoax bomb warnings briefly closed one of Paris's two main airports, Orly, and a second airport at Montpellier in the south of the country -- PARIS (AFP)
