AP reports that a fire at a Baghdad hospital killed 11 newborn infants.
Investigators believe that the fire started due to an electrical malfunction. At this time, they do not believe foul play was involved.
Ahmed al-Roudaini, the spokesman for Iraq's Health Ministry, confirmed to AP that a fire broke out in the maternity ward of the Yarmouk Hospital late Tuesday night. Some reports indicate that the fire was localized to the premature births ward.
Yarmouk is a teaching hospital in western Baghdad. It possesses one of the largest obestetrics and gynocology departments in the country.
A similar fire broke out in Saudi Arabia's Jazan Hospital in December, 2016. Over 25 people were killed by the blaze that began due to an electrical malfunction in the intensive care unit.
