emicool to build two new cooling plants for dubai investments park projects

Emirates District Cooling Company LLC (Emicool), a subsidiary of M’Sharie, the private equity arm of Dubai Investments PJSC, has recently announced plans to construct two new District Cooling Plants in Dubai Investments Park (DIP) in a move to supply up to 125,000 tonnes of refrigeration (TR) for five mixed-used projects in the Park.

The company, a joint venture between M’Sharie and Union Properties PJSC, will construct the Emicool District Cooling Plant 6, called the Ritaj District Cooling Plant, with a 50,000 TR capacity; while the Emicool District Cooling Plant 3 will have a full capacity of 75,000 TR. The Plants will provide chilled water to various projects in DIP, including 10,000 TR for Ritaj Residential Compound; 3,500 TR for Dunes Village; 10,000 TR for Dubai Lagoon; 6,500 TR for offices and showrooms and 15,000 TR for labour accommodation.

“The construction of two additional cooling plants in DIP will ensure a sufficient supply of chilled water that will meet the air conditioning needs of both residential and business communities in the Park. With our cutting edge cooling technology, the Plants will be perfectly equipped to meet the increasing demand for district cooling, especially as more people are moving to DIP for their residential and corporate headquarters,” said  Fouad Younan, General Manager of Emicool.

Emicool has awarded the construction contract to Adearest for the Ritaj District Cooling Plant, which is expected to be completed by June 2008. Adearest will also manage the construction of Plant 3, which is divided in three phases each with a capacity of 25,000 TR, to be completed by August 2008. Reticulation works for the plants, which will start this year, has been awarded to Drake & Scull and will be completed by March 2008.

District cooling is the centralised production and distribution of chilled water via underground pipeline to cool the indoor air of office, industrial and residential buildings. District cooling is becoming increasingly popular in the UAE, with a predicted demand of almost 20 million TR in the next 10 years. Emicool has poised itself to be the preferred district cooling provider in the country by investing over AED 2.5 billion in its cutting edge infrastructure and by continually enhancing its expertise in the service.
