Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani headed for Tehran on Tuesday on a short visit for talks with Iranian President Mohammed Khatami, Kuwait’s official news agency (KUNA) reported.
Authoritative sources in Doha were quoted by the agency as saying that Sheikh Hamad, who is currently chairing the Organization of the Islamic conference (OIC), will discuss with Khatami the latest developments in Afghanistan and their consequences for Muslim states.
The two leaders will also exchange views on the current international situation, the US-led war against terrorism in Afghanistan, and the situation in Palestine in light of escalating Israeli aggression.
Qatar, as head of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, on Sunday called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council to put an end to "Israel's aggression" against the Palestinians.
A day later, Iran condemned the "crimes" perpetrated by the "Zionist regime" against the Palestinians, and also called on the UN Security Council to put an end to "Israeli exactions,” AFP quoted Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi as saying.
“We are very concerned by the deteriorating situation in the Occupied Territories and we urge the Security Council to take its responsibilities and fulfil its legal obligations,” he added – Albawaba.com
