Energy City Qatar and Qtel today concluded a major strategic announcement to support the operations of a world-class data centre designed to support the international energy industry.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Nasser Marafih, CEO, Qtel and Mr. Hesham Ismail Al Emadi, CEO, Energy City Qatar.
Dr. Nasser Marafih, CEO, Qtel said: “Given our heritage in helping to build the communications infrastructure for the energy sector, Qtel is able to draw upon significant internal resources and expertise to support Energy City Qatar. Because of its strategic significance for the nation, we are ensuring that the latest solutions are being deployed, and that the entire network is one of the most robust and responsive yet deployed in the region.”
Under the terms of the agreement, Energy City Qatar, the landmark business centre at the heart of Qatar’s industrial growth strategy, will offer some of the most advanced data communications services and solutions ever provided in the region in collaboration with Qtel.
Energy City Qatar will build the world-class data centre and Qtel will provide full support to operate the facility and to extend its services to local, regional and international energy companies.
Mr. Hesham Ismail Al Emadi, CEO, Energy City Qatar: “Energy City Qatar is the vision of His Highness the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani. It will be the world’s next major energy hub, which requires the highest possible standards of communication support and the potential to develop new solutions to meet the needs of the industry. Working with some of the world’s best communications company, we’re supported by experts who can match the pace of change within the energy sector.”
Built over 1.2 square kilometres of land, the US$ 2.6 billion integrated energy centre will be home to global and regional energy companies upon completion. It will be the Middle East’s first energy business centre catering exclusively to the commercial, technical and human resource needs of the oil and gas companies operating in the region.
The Energy City Qatar team is working to attract a wide range of organisations, including international and national oil companies, oil field services and infrastructure, secondary oil and gas companies, and advanced technical training and simulators.
In order to fully support the needs of these highly-advanced companies, which work in industries where pricing, availability and volumes of energy can change in a second, Energy City Qatar is developing a highly-advanced communication network capable of enabling the highest possible standards of information access and knowledge-sharing.
At the heart of the development’s offering will be Energy City Qatar’s carrier-class Internet Data Centre and Network Operations Centre, supported by round-the-clock international expertise from Qtel, the communication partner for the development.
Following the ground-breaking ceremony for the headquarters that took place in February 2009, work began on installing an integrated communication infrastructure to support advanced networking, data and voice telecommunications, IP and Internet solutions.
A team of specialists from Qtel worked directly with Energy City Qatar to ensure that a full roadmap was in place for the development of the Data Centre and Network Operations Centre, and that the operation was positioned to grow in scale and performance as the Energy City Development continued to expand.
As well as providing direct support for the employees and operations of Energy City Qatar, tenants will also have access to a range of world-class services through the support of the communication partner. Qtel will provide advanced network management tools to support a range of managed and hosting services. Qtel will also deliver global and local Network Services in partnership with Qatar Energy City.
This will be supported by a controlled environment that optimises the deployment of key components such as power, cooling, and networking systems to ensure the systems are fully scalable according to the needs of different tenants.
In addition, the companies have developed a full crisis and backup strategy for Energy City Qatar, including the creation of data recovery services, to ensure that tenants can operate at the highest levels without the threat of interruption or data loss.
As a result, companies in Energy City Qatar will benefit from a secure, flexible network infrastructure that will allow tenants and buyers throughout the energy sector to readily incorporate new technologies, applications, and services over time.
Building upon the technological infrastructure in place at Energy City Qatar, Qtel will research the potential benefits of new technology solutions to reduce costs and drive efficiencies for oil and gas concerns. This relationship will provide Energy City Qatar with a distinct strategic advantage as an energy hub, as the unique range of technology will be available first in Qatar.
Energy City Qatar is strategically situated within the Lusail Development, a 35- square-kilometre development located north of the city of Doha.
