Emirates Telecommunications Corporation- etisalat- was a key participant in the opening session of Connect 2006, the telecom conference being held at the JW Marriott, Dubai, between 24th and 27th June 2006. In his inaugural address, Nasser Bin Obood, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, etisalat, stated that the regional telecom sector is witnessing steady growth due to the opportunities available for operators to expand beyond their traditional boundaries.

"etisalat is uniquely place to provide a whole range of services, and this has worked to our advantage when we enter a new market. Our nearly 30 years of experience in the UAE market and our world-class backbone network and resource pool have ensured very successful operations and investments in overseas markets. etisalat’s operations in Saudi Arabia, Mobily, has now created one of the fastest growing companies in the Middle East”, Bin Obood said.

He also reiterated that one of the key success factors of etisalat lies in the fact that it has operated with a competitive mindset though it was a monopoly in the UAE market in the past three decades. "etisalat was the first regional telecom operator to launch revolutionary services such as pre-GSM mobile services, 3G, MMS, Next Generation Network, and recently, the etisalat BlackBerry service."

In his speech, Bin Obood also talked about the new brand identity of etisalat, which aims at extending people’s reach to each other, their aspirations, and ambitions. He also focused on the key role played by etisalat in making the UAE one the world's most connected countries.

etisalat is the platinum sponsor of Connect 2006, which is organized by IIR. This event brings together regional and international telecom majors to discuss important topics such as strategies of growth in the Middle East telecom sector, growth opportunities in developing and competitive telecom markets, achieving revenues by providing customers with latest technologies that meet their needs, challenges faced by telecom sector in the region, and the role played by telecom regulatory authorities.
