EU-Iran Talks to Open in Tehran Next Week

Tehran will host the seventh annual comprehensive EU-Iran talks on September 3, reported the official Iranian news agency, IRNA, citing a press report on Thursday.  

In an interview with the daily Iran News, Shamseddin Kharegani, the director of the Western European desk at the foreign ministry, said that "critical dialogue" between the EU and Iran began in 1992, with six similar gatherings already held between the two sides. 

These meetings will be at the deputy foreign ministerial level, and the EU representation wiil be via the Troika Committee, composed of members from Belgium, Spain, the EU Commission as well as a representative from the EU ministerial secretariat, he added.  

He said that the talks would focus on three main topics of mutual EU-Iran cooperation, regional issues and international matters. 

"The most significant issue will be the topic of EU-Iran cooperation, which has for a long time been under discussion and negotiation, and in case a mutual understanding is reached between the two sides during the Tehran meetings, we are optimistic that relevant cooperation agreements on trade and commerce will be inked," the official said – Albawaba.com
