The EU's special envoy for the Middle East said on a visit to the Saudi capital that he was carrying new ideas to help implement last month's Sharm el-Sheikh ceasefire accord between Israel and the Palestinians.

Miguel Angel Moratinos, who arrived in the Saudi capital late Monday, told reporters that he had "ideas and proposals" aimed at implementing the Sharm el-Sheikh agreement.

The US-brokered truce declared after talks in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on October 16-17 between Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak aims to halt violence in the Palestinian territories.

The agreement also called for the establishment of a fact-finding mission to investigate the cause of clashes since late September that have now left more than 180 dead, most of them Palestinian.

Moratinos did not specify what his "ideas" were, but stressed the need to implement the agreement "so as to prepare the ground for a resumption of talks between the Palestinians and Israelis."

The envoy of the European Union, which also took part in the Sharm el-Sheikh summit, was expected to meet several top Saudi officials, including King Fahd, Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz and Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal - RIYADH (AFP)
