Europe's Middle East envoy Miguel Angel Moratinos and a senior French foreign ministry official arrived in Jordan Thursday for a brief visit and exploratory talks on regional issues, officials said.

Moratinos and Yves Aubin de la Messuziere, the head of the Middle East and North Africa desk at the French foreign ministry, were due to meet Royal Cabinet Chief Fayez Tarawneh and foreign ministry director General Shaher Bak.

They were then due to go to Cairo late Thursday.

They flew in from Gaza following talks with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, and Moratinos later told reporters that Europe was committed to ending the spiral of deadly Israeli-Palestinian unrest and reviving peace talks.

French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine is also expected to visit the Middle East, including Jordan, next week. France holds the current rotating presidency of the European Union.
