Excellence is my aim... An Exclusive Initiative Launched By Dubai Customs

With aim of realizing the objectives of Dubai Customs Strategic Business Plan 2007 – 2011 where quality and excellence are basic elements leading to it’s achievement, and in-line with the it’s sought efforts towards spreading awareness amongst employees, and for these ends and others, Dubai Customs has launched the initiative “Excellence is my aim” , in organizing series of sessions and seminars to benefit Dubai Customs employees. The initiative is basically intended to increase quality culture awareness and establish applicability of it’s relevant conceptual practices. The spearhead of Dubai Customs exerted efforts for the past tow years in this area, were fruitfully responsible for earning eight international certificates of Quality and Excellence.
 
Up to now, the initiative involved organization of five seminars, with the participation of tens of managers, heads of sections and employees from different departments. The inaugural session (under the title of benching) was delivered by Mr. Ali Fudlani - Manager of Corporate Excellence – Jumeira Group, introducing how people can make use of the international organization accumulated experiences in the field improving and developing business and tools of benching. He learnt them with the most prominent local and international organization that can be taken as a pattern for conducting comparative benching.

Dr. Ahmed Alhindawi, Consultant of the DG Office for the Corporate Excellence – delivered the lecture - under title of “Leadership”,  explaining the concept of leadership, it’s significance, requirement, characteristics and style, highlighting that, the leadership is significantly facilitating an organization in realizing it’s set out objectives, contributing in controlling & solving obstacles of business, besides, it endeavors to enhance strengths of the organization and tackling weakness. Dr. Alhindawi enumerated the characteristics of the leader from the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Almaktoum, Vice President, Prime minister and Ruler of Dubai, a part of it, interaction & compliance, altruism, shouldering of responsibilities and readiness of hard decision – making.

Miss Hind Alyoha – Senior Manager of Dubai Customs Excellence Performance Dept, delivered the 3rd lecture – under title of “ Dubai Customs…. Towards adoptable Elastic System in Corporate Performance Dept”, She overviewed the reasons for focusing on the Performance Management as considerably thought to be a key approach of measuring and improving performance. She also discussed the systems and tools of Performance Management especially the balance- scorecard and performance analysis tools. She stressed on the importance of balance –scorecard and it’s essential role that can be played in boosting economic and social development and improvement of customers loyalty and adoptability of best practices in business process and systems, besides, investment of efficient human capitals & advanced technology.

Mr. Asim Algabra – Expert of Corporate Excellence, in the forth day session, he touched on the subject “Quality and Excellence Tools”, at the session Algabra spoke about the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Almaktoum- Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and the keenness of focusing on the Excellence and the Distinguished, mentioning some of his sayings. After discussing the concept of Excellence as considered a commitment to international standard, initiating tasks successfully from it’s first stage, meeting ongoing and future requirements and needs of employees, the lecturer continued explaining some Quality and Excellence tools exposing some practical examples, one of these most important tools – is Pareto Principle who states that, for many events, roughly 08% of the effects come from 20% of the causes and vise versa. And also explained” thinking repository” which is basically providing appropriated environment for motivating a group of individuals to brainstorming creativity and invention.

The fifth day session, under title of “Introduction to Quality System Management – ISO 9001” Mr. Mohammed Abo Hosna- the Quality Engineer – Strategy and Corporate Excellence Dept, discussed the basic principles of ISO 9001:2008, focusing on customer’s satisfaction and the continual business improvement of the dept. He introduced the requirements of ISO and the benefits that can be brought about if employees and Dubai Customs follow applicability of Quality System Management.

Some of employees who attended the sessions, expressed their thanks and appreciation to Dubai Customs for this initiative.  I thank Dubai Customs for it’s continued efforts on seeking ways to uplift with employees to a better level of distinguished performance and increasing awareness thorough acquainting them with Quality Standards, Excellence & Business approaches, besides, providing them with rich and useful information that assist in self-development and performance improvement irrespective to their levels and grades Dania Mohammed Nasir from Risks and Audits Dept said.

Nazih Faraj, from IT Dept said: such useful sessions contributed in gapping bridge of understanding in relation to the applicability of administrative theories and approaches in a way that facilitated conceiving and adoption. As well, this has successful found and strengthened channels of communication between managers and individuals which will eventually be great benefits to the Dept and community as a whole.

from the Communication Dept, Magdi Ashoor said: the sessions (Excellence is my aim) have effectively enhanced and increased employees awareness and widened knowledge and practical education, and also extended areas of knowledge to all individuals at the level of Dubai Customs in a way that might increase efficiencies and enlighten them with most critical issues and programs

Usama Ali from Customers Partnership Section, expressed his opinion about importance of such sessions which provide employees with information and also this will develop relationships amongst people, increasing their efficiencies productivity.

By the end of each session, the Strategy and Corporate Excellence Dept would collect the session assessment forms that distributed to the attendees and the assessment results reached up to 4, 4.6 out of 5 marks, bearing in mind that the assessment is within rating of general satisfaction survey to include assessment of sessions, organizing matters, the lecturer and subject matter of the lecture.
