ALBAWABA - An explosion shook the Russian capital Moscow leading to the killing of the head of the Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defence Forces (NBC), Lt Gen Igor Kirillov.

According to the Russian Telegram news outlet Astra, Lt Gen Kirillov and another Russian servicemember, who was believed to be his personal assistant, were killed in an explosion outside the entrance to a residential building in Moscow early on December 17.

Russia's Investigative Committee is conducting a criminal investigation into the incident. The committee reported that the explosion was caused by a bomb planted on a scooter near the building's entrance.

On December 16, Ukrainian Security Services (SBU) accused Kirillov of being responsible for "the massive use of banned chemical weapons" against Ukrainian forces.

"On Kirillov's orders, since the beginning of the full-scale war, more than 4,800 cases of enemy use of chemical munitions have been recorded," the so-called SBU stated.

On October 8, the United Kingdom sanctioned Kirillov and his unit for using chemical weapons on the Ukrainian battlefield.
